Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

Additional information

Physical state: Formamide is a slightly viscous, colourless to pale yellowish liquid which is odourless or, at industrial grade, with a faint smell of ammonia.

Melting point: 2.6°C

Boiling point: 218.3°C (decomposition starts above 140°C)

Density: 1.13 g/cm³ at 20°C

Particle size distribution: Formamide is marketed and used as liquid.

Vapour pressure: 0.06 hPa at 20°C

Partition coefficient: -0.82 at 25°C

Water solubility: 1E06 mg/L at 25°C

Surface tension: Based on the chemical structure, no surface activity is expected.

Flash point: 152°C at 1013 hPa

Auto flammability: >500 °C

Flammability: Not flammable; based on its molecular structure and industrial experience. Formamide has no pyrophoric properties, it does not react with water resulting in the formation of flammable gas.

Explosiveness: Not explosive. Examination of the structure indicates that there are no groups associated with explosive properties.

Oxidising properties: Not oxidising. Based on its chemical structure, the substance it is not considered to be oxidising.

Stability in organic solvents and identity of relevant degradation products: In accordance with column 1 of Annex IX, this study is required only if the stability of the substance is considered to be critical. This is not the case for formamide.

Dissociation constant: pKa at 20/25°C: -0.48

Viscosity: 3.764 mPa*s at 20°C
