Reference
Endpoint:
toxicity to aquatic algae and cyanobacteria
Type of information:
read-across from supporting substance (structural analogue or surrogate)
Adequacy of study:
key study
Reliability:
2 (reliable with restrictions)
Rationale for reliability incl. deficiencies:
guideline study without detailed documentation
Reason / purpose for cross-reference:
read-across source
Qualifier:
according to guideline
Guideline:
OECD Guideline 201 (Alga, Growth Inhibition Test)
Version / remarks:
1984
Deviations:
not specified
GLP compliance:
yes
Test type:
static
Water media type:
freshwater
Limit test:
yes
Total exposure duration:
72 h
Nominal and measured concentrations:
Test concentrations consisted of a control series and an additive control series (HCO-40, 100 mg/L). A limit test was conducted at the highest dispersion concentration of 100.0 mg/L. Concentrations were measure using HPLC upon start and completion of exposure.

Duration:
72 h
Dose descriptor:
EC50
Effect conc.:
>= 100 mg/L
Nominal / measured:
nominal
Conc. based on:
test mat.
Basis for effect:
growth rate
Key result
Duration:
72 h
Dose descriptor:
NOEC
Effect conc.:
>= 100 mg/L
Nominal / measured:
nominal
Conc. based on:
test mat.
Basis for effect:
growth rate
Validity criteria fulfilled:
yes
Conclusions:
The test substance did not cause a reduction of growth in a series of algal cultures (test units) exposed to the test item for 72 h. The 72-h NOEC and the 72-h EC50 were each reported as ≥ 100 mg/L as determined by comparison of areas in growth curves. The 24-h to 48-h NOEC and the 72-h EC50 were each reported as ≥ 100 mg/L as determined by comparison of growth rates.

Description of key information

The test substance (TOTM, an analogue substance through read-across) did not cause a reduction of growth in a series of algal cultures (test units) exposed to the test item for 72 h.  The 72-h NOEC and the 72-h EC50 were each reprted as 100 mg/L as determined by comparison of areas in growth curves.  The 24-h to 48-h NOEC and the 72-h EC50 were each reported as 100 mg/L as determined by comparison of growth rates.

Key value for chemical safety assessment

EC50 for freshwater algae:
100 mg/L
EC10 or NOEC for freshwater algae:
100 mg/L
