Conditions : All determinations were performed at 19.0 ± 1.0 °C.

Aliquots (see following table) of test item were weighed into the sample cell and placed into the pycnometer.

In triplicate, pressure readings (P1(sample) and P2(sample)) were taken after pressurizing the reference cell (Vref) and then switching to the sample cell (Vcell) for each determination.

The pressure readings and the calculated volume for the reference and sample cells are shown in the joint document WK38GS).

As the reference cell volume and sample cell volume were within the defined tolerance (90.953 ± 1.0 cm3 and 149.225 ± 1.0 cm3 for the reference and sample cell volumes respectively) the gas comparison pycnometer was therefore considered acceptable for use.

Applicant's summary and conclusion

Conclusions:
Duplicate determinations were performed to ensure a reproducibility of less than ± 20 kg/m3 was obtained.
The mass density of a substance varies with temperature and pressure and this variance is typically negligible for solids. Increasing the temperature of a substance may decrease its density by increasing the volume of that substance. Typical thermal expansion coefficients of solids are in the order of 10-5 °C-1, and the volumetric expansion of stainless steel (used as calibration spheres) at 20 °C is approximately 5.2 x 10-5 °C-1. Therefore, a change in temperature of several degrees will have no significant effect on the volume and hence the density of a solid substance.
