Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

Additional information

There are no reliable aquatic toxicity data available for 3-[dimethoxy(methyl)silyl]propanethiol (CAS 31001-77-1), therefore good quality data for an appropriate structural analogue, 3-trimethoxysilylpropane-1-thiol (CAS 4420-74-0), have been read across. Reliable short-term toxicity tests results are available for invertebrates (Daphnia magna) and algae (Scenedesmus subspicatus (new name: Desmodesmus subspicatus)) for 3-trimethoxysilylpropane-1-thiol (CAS 4420-74-0). The relevant short-term values are:

Daphnia: EC50 (48 h): 6.7 mg/l (equivalent to 5.3 mg/l when expressed in terms of 3-(trihydroxysilyl)propanethiol); NOEC: 2.7 mg/l

Algae: ErC50 (72 h): 931 mg/l; ErC10: 92 mg/l; NOErC: 40 mg/l (the ErC50, ErC10 and NOErC are equivalent to 731, 72 and 31 mg/l respectively when expressed in terms of 3-(trihydroxysilyl)propanethiol)

The rapid hydrolysis of 3-trimethoxysilylpropane-1-thiol (CAS 4420-74-0) (half-life 2.6 h at pH 7 and 20-25 °C) means it is likely that the test organisms in each test were exposed primarily to the hydrolysis products, 3-(trihydroxysilyl)propanethiol.

Refer to Section 6 endpoint summary for further discussion of the approach to chemical safety assessment and justification for read across.
