- Executive summary:
A study according to Regulation (EC) No 440/2008 method A.14 was performed to determine the explosive properties of the test item. The test item was not sensitive to friction using a friction load of 360 N, not sensitive to impact using an impact energy of 40 J and not thermal sensitive if heated under defined confinement. Therefore the test item was considered not to be explosive.
Reference
Thermal Stability
The DSC-measurement in a closed stainless steel crucible showed no endothermic or exothermic effects up to the maximum temperature of the measurement (300 °C). At 300 °C the measurement was stopped to prevent a burst of the crucible caused by the vapour pressure of water (a main component of the test item).
Explosive Properties
Due to the high pressure caused by the evaporation of the test item and the leakage of the crucibles the measurement could not be carried out until 500 °C. Therefore the test on explosive properties was performed.
Mechanical sensitivity (friction):
No explosion was observed within 6 tests using a pin load with 360 N.
Mechanical Sensitivity (Shock):
No explosion within 6 tests using a mass of 10 kg falling from a height of 0.4 m was observed.
Thermal sensitivity:
Three tests with a circular nozzle plate with a hole of 2 mm diameter were performed. The following tablegives the results of the tests on thermal stability.

t1: time to any reaction, e.g. whistle or flame
t2: time to main reaction, e.g. rupture of tube or flashing
The test on thermal sensitivity carried out with a nozzle with a diameter of 2.0 mm showed no explosion. Compared to the nozzle with a diameter of 6.0 mm the venting area of the nozzle with 2.0 mm is smaller by an order of magnitude. Additionally the main compound of the test item is water (80.5 %) which has no explosives properties on its own. Due to these facts an explosion with a nozzle width of 6.0 mm is excluded.
Description of key information
The test item is not explosive.
Key value for chemical safety assessment
- Explosiveness:
- non explosive
Additional information
A study according to Regulation (EC) No 440/2008 method A.14 was performed to determine the explosive properties of the test item. The test item was not sensitive to friction using a friction load of 360 N, not sensitive to impact using an impact energy of 40 J and not thermal sensitive if heated under defined confinement. Therefore the test item was considered not to be explosive.
Justification for classification or non-classification
Classification, Labelling, and Packaging Regulation (EC) No 1272/2008
The available experimental test data are reliable and suitable for classification purposes under Regulation (EC) No 1272/2008. Based on available data, the test item is not classified for explosiveness according to Regulation (EC) No 1272/2008 (CLP), as amended for the tenth time in Regulation (EC) No 2017/776.
