Classification of Bis(2-ethylhexyl) 4,4’-{6-[4-tert-butylcarbamoyl)anilino]-1,3,5-triazine-2,4-diyldiimino} dibenzoate for effects in the environment

In determining the classification appropriate to Bis(2-ethylhexyl) 4,4’-{6-[4-tert-butylcarbamoyl)anilino]-1,3,5-triazine-2,4-diyldiimino} dibenzoate, it is necessary to consider all available evidence concerning its persistence, potential to accumulate and predicted or observed environmental fate and behaviour that may present a long-term and/or delayed danger to the structure and/or functioning of aquatic ecosystems. These points are considered below. 

Persistence:

Available data suggests that Bis(2-ethylhexyl) 4,4’-{6-[4-tert-butylcarbamoyl)anilino]-1,3,5-triazine-2,4-diyldiimino} dibenzoate is persistent in nature and so cannot be considered to have rapid biodegradation in the environment. By applying weight of evidence approach to the target chemical it was found that the degradation percentage of Bis(2-ethylhexyl) 4,4’-{6-[4-tert-butylcarbamoyl)anilino]-1,3,5-triazine-2,4-diyldiimino} dibenzoate in water medium is ranging between 45 to 64 %.Thus considering it to be none biodegradable.

Thus, the substance Bis(2-ethylhexyl) 4,4’-{6-[4-tert-butylcarbamoyl)anilino]-1,3,5-triazine-2,4-diyldiimino} dibenzoate is classified as a persistent (P) chemical. 

 

Bioaccumulation:

The potential for Bis(2-ethylhexyl) 4,4’-{6-[4-tert-butylcarbamoyl)anilino]-1,3,5-triazine-2,4-diyldiimino} dibenzoate to bioaccumulate in the tissues of organisms that inhabit aquatic or terrestrial matrices is negligible as the BCF factor for the substance is less than 1000. The estimated BCF of Bis(2-ethylhexyl) 4,4’-{6-[4-tert-butylcarbamoyl)anilino]-1,3,5-triazine-2,4-diyldiimino} dibenzoate is highest 3.16 L/kg wet-wt and below the threshold of 2000. 

Thus Bis(2-ethylhexyl) 4,4’-{6-[4-tert-butylcarbamoyl)anilino]-1,3,5-triazine-2,4-diyldiimino} dibenzoate does not satisfy the criterion for classification as bio accumulative (B).

 

Toxicity:

As per Column 2 (Annex VII and VIII) of the REACH regulation, a study does not need to be conducted if there are mitigating factors indicating that aquatic toxicity is unlikely to occur for instanceif the substance is highly insolublein water or the substance is unlikely to cross biological membranes. The application of the equilibrium partitioning method is not also possible.

Bis(2-ethylhexyl) 4,4’-{6-[4-tert-butylcarbamoyl)anilino]-1,3,5-triazine-2,4-diyldiimino} dibenzoatedoes not satisfy the environmental effects criterion for classification as toxic (T).

Though the chemical (Bis(2-ethylhexyl) 4,4’-{6-[4-tert-butylcarbamoyl)anilino]-1,3,5-triazine-2,4-diyldiimino} dibenzoate) indicate that it will qualify as P, but as per REACH Regulation (EC) No 1907/2006 (REACH) ANNEX XIII, it can be inferred that the substance is not a PBT (including vPvB).

Conclusion on classification

Classification is not triggered based on available data, according to REGULATION (EC) No 1272/2008 OF THE EUROPEAN PARLIAMENT AND OF THE COUNCIL on classification, labelling and packaging of substances and mixtures, amending and repealing Directives 67/548/EEC and 1999/45/EC, and amending Regulation (EC) No 1907/2006.
