There are no proprietary studies investigating the environmental fate of the substance; however there is an extensive array of published information on the fate of chromium species in the environment and this information is collated and reviewed in detail in the WHO Concise International Chemical Assessment Document 76 on Inorganic Chromium (III) Compounds, an environmental Risk Assessment Report on metallic chromium and trivalent chromium compounds sponsored by ICDA, and the EU RAR document for Cr (VI) compounds (which incorporates extensive discussion of the environmental fate properties of Cr(III) compounds). The behaviour of chromium species in the environment can be influenced by environmental factors such as pH and water hardness. Irrespective of the form that chromium is introduced into the environment, the actual species present vary according to various equilibria and/or irreversible reactions which are driven according to the local conditions (e. g. pH, presence of reducing or oxidising components).

The substance forms reversible equilibria and the proportion of the species present depends on various environmental factors. There are no proprietary studies investigating the hydrolysis of the substance in aqueous media. The substance is an inorganic element and sufficient information on the speciation of the substance under various environmental conditions is available.
