Description of key information
In a well conducted skin irritation study conducted according to OECD test guideline 404 (GLP status not known) trimethylchlorosilane was corrosive to the skin of rabbits (Bayer AG 1985). In the key eye irritation study 0.1 ml of chlorotrimethylsilane was severely irritating to the eyes (BRRC 1982). Based on the findings of acute inhalation sudies, chlorotrimethylsilane is irritating to the respiratory tract (Jean 1999).

Additional information
The most reliable studies were selected as the key studies. Where there was more than one study with the same reliability score (i.e. skin irritation), the most recent study was selected as the key study. The studies for eye irritation showed on balance that trimethylsilanol is corrosive to the eyes. Chlorotrimethylsilane is rapidly hydrolysed to methylsilanediol and hydrogen chloride in the presence of moisture. Therefore signs of skin and eye irritation/corrosion are due to the hydrolysis product HCl.

Justification for classification or non-classification
The test substance is labelled R35-37, 'Causes severe burns', 'Irritating to eyes' and 'Irritating to respiratory system' under Directive 67/548/EEC and 'Skin Corr. 1A' under Regulation 1272/2008. This is based on the skin irritation/corrosion data that show the test substance to be clearly corrosive to the skin. It is assumed that substances that are corrosive to the skin are also damaging to the eyes, so there is no separate labelling for the eyes (hazard statement H314 is required). There are no specific data for respiratory irritation. However, the pathology examination in the key acute inhalation study revealed signs of respiratory irritation/corrosion. The hazard statement 'EUH071 Corrosive to the respiratory tract' is proposed on the basis of effects observed following exposure via the acute inhalation route.
