First-aid measures

General Information: Remove immediately dirty and wet clothes. Bring affected persons into fresh air. Preventive skin protection is advisable.

After Skin Contact: Wash affected skin thoroughly with water. Go to a doctor or the ambulance station.

After Eye Contact: Rinse by good opened eyelid at least for 15 minutes with flowing water. Go to an oculist.

After Inhalation: Bring affected persons into fresh air and keep at rest. Go immediately to a doctor, lung oedema is possible.

After Ingestion: Let drink immediately plenty of water.

Note to Physician:

Potential Symptoms: Cough, difficulty in breathing.

Potential Hazards: Severe burns. Lung oedema.

Information on Methods of Treatment: Symptomatic treatment. For clarifying the danger of a toxic lung oedema, make as fast as possible a thorax-X-ray picture.

Fire-fighting measures

Suitable Extinguishing Agents: Chlorosulfonic acid does not burn, therefore adapt the fire precaution to the surroundings. Cool storage tanks and container with water spray.

Extinguishing Agents not to be used: If there are larger amounts free, do never use water.

Special Fire-Fighting Equipment: Independent respiratory system and gastight acid-proof protection suit.

Special Risks: When heated for a longer time, chlorosulfonic acid decompose into hydrogen chloride, chlorine, sulfur dioxide, sulfuryl chloride, pyrosulfuryl chloride and sulfuric acid. In contact with water explosion like decomposition with great temperature build-up into hydrogen chloride and sulfuric acid.

Accidental release measures

Personal Protection: Keep person away and stay upwind.

Use personnel protection equipment.

Environment Protection: Avoid large square dimension. Knock down gases/vapours/mist with water spray. Do not empty unneutralised into open waters.

Measures after Spillage/Leakage/Release: Use acid-proof tools and clothing.

Dam up and blanket with crushed limestone or dry sand for disposal.

Rests: Small amounts rinse away with plenty of water, diluted solution neutralise with limestone or soda.

In residential and industrial areas tighten all deep-seated rooms.

Handling and storage

This substance is handled under Strictly Controlled Conditions in accordance with REACH regulation Article 17(3) for on-site isolated intermediates and, in case the substance is transported to other sites for further processing, the substance should be handled at these sites under the Strictly Controlled Conditions as specified in REACH regulation Article 18(4). Site documentation to support safe handling arrangements including the selection of engineering, administrative and personal protective equipment controls in accordance with risk-based management systems is available at each Manufacturing site. Written confirmation of application of Strictly Controlled Conditions has been received from affected Distributor and Downstream Manufacturer/User of the Registrant’s intermediate.

Handling

Information on safe Handling: Carry out racking procedures only at stations with suitable exhaustion. Use suitable separators for cleaning the waste air. Use acid proof equipment.

Use only dry and closed systems.

Information on Fire- and Explosion Protection: Adapt fire- and explosion protection to the surroundings.

By surrounding fire cool containers and tanks with water spray, but avoid any entry of water into them - danger of explosion.

Storage

Requirement for Storage Places and Containers: Use containers from enamel. Ventilate containers to suitable separators.

Avoid entry of moisture in any cases.

Information about Storage Restrictions: Do not store with flammable, basic or aqueous substances.

Storage class (VCI Lagerklassierung): 8L Corrosive liquids

Technical Preventive Measures: Attack the most plastic materials and many metals. Against literature references Aluminium is not resistant.

Ingredients with Workplace Threshold Limit: none

Personal Protection

Respiratory Protection: Gas mask with protection filter B (identification colour grey) or E (identification colour yellow) in combination with particle filter P2. By concentrations over 1 vol% use an independent respiratory system.

Hand Protection: Rubber or PVC gloves. Preventive skin protection is advisable.

Eye Protection: Gastight goggles or face shield.

Body Protection: Acid-proof protection suit.

General Protection Measures: Avoid any contact with liquid, gases or vapours. Do not breathe vapours and gases.

Hygienic Measures: Eating, drinking and storage of food in the working area is forbidden. After work look for thorough skin cleansing and skin care.

Stability and reactivity

Conditions to avoid: Heating or distillation under vacuum for a longer time may occur partiell decomposition into hydrogen chloride, chlorine, sulfur dioxide, sulfuryl chloride, pyrosulfuryl chloride and sulfuric acid.

Incompatible Substances: Water, alcohols, bases, amines, ketones, ether, dimethylsulfoxide.

On contact with moist metal hydrogen may be deliberated.

Dangerous Decomposition Products: Chlorine, hydrogen chloride, sulfur dioxide, sulfuryl chloride, pyrosulfuryl chloride, sulfuric acid.

Disposal considerations

Product: Take up with suitable adsorbent and dispose it looking upon local rules.

Polluted Package: Empty package completely. Neutralise the rest with water and lye. Dispose the neutralisation liquid upon local rules. Packages which are cleaned this way, can be disposed on the usual way.
