Additional information

Since no reliable aquatic algae test is available for C12-16AS Na (CAS 73296-89-6), in accordance to Regulation (EC) 1907/2006 Annex XI, 1.5, a read-across to other structurally related category member was conducted. Read-across data from the following substances were used C12-14AS Na (CAS 85586-07-8) and C12-18AS Na (CAS 68955-19-5). Toxicity of alkyl sulfates is dependent on the carbon chain length and the influence of the counter ion can be neglected.

Toxicity of the C12-14AS Na (CAS 85586-07-8) on aquatic algae was investigated in a GLP study with Desmodesmus subspicatus according to EU Method C.3 (Scholz, Elementis, 1995). The study resulted in the 72-hour EC50 value for growth rate of above 20 mg/L. The corresponding 72-hour EC10 for growth rate was 5.4 mg/L. This test is regarded as key study and these values are expected to be a realistic also for C12-16AS Na (CAS 73296-89-6).

One GLP-study is available for C12-18AS Na (CAS 68955-19-1). The study of Scholz (1997) was conducted according to the EU method C.3 with Desmodesmus subspicatus. The EC50 value for growth rate reported after 72 h of exposure was 20 mg/L. The 72-hour EC10 value was 7.6 mg/L.
