Experimental data on the acute toxicity of 2 -aminoethyldiethylamine (CAS 100 -36 -7) to aquatic invertebrates are not available. However, data are available for the read-across substance 3-aminopropyldiethylamine (CAS 104 -78 -9).
In a key static immobilization test, young Daphnia magna (< 24 h old) were exposed to the structurally similar substance 3-aminopropyldiethylamine (CAS 104 -78 -9) for 48 hours according ISO 6341 (Water quality - Determination of the Inhibition of the Mobility of Daphnia magna Straus (Cladocera, Crustacea)). The test substance was tested in a range of concentrations between 8.25 mg/L and 8250 mg/L. No analytical monitoring was done. However, it is assumed that the test concentrations remained stable over the exposure period based on a high water solubility, a low Henry's Law constant and a low adsorption potential (log Kow and log Koc < 3) of the substance. This was confirmed in an algal growth inhibition test (see IUCLID chapter 6.1.5), where the substance was stable in aqueous solution for 72 hours. The 48-h EC50 of the structurally similar substance 3-aminopropyldiethylamine was determined to be 30.16 mg/L (Arkema, 1991, report no.: 1944/91). Data on measured pH values of the test solutions are not available. In addition, there is no information on pH-adjustment. As the test substance causes a pH-shift to more alkaline conditions with increasing test substance concentrations (see f. ex. the supporting study below, BASF AG, 1989, report no.: 1/0020/2/89 -0020/89), it cannot be ruled out that the observed toxicity is at least partly due to the pH-shift.
In addition, a supporting study with the read-across substance 3-aminopropyldiethylamine (CAS 104 -78 -9) to short-term toxicity test to aquatic invertebrates was performed according to EU Directive 79/831/EEC, Annex V, part C on the immobility of Daphnia magna Straus in a 48 hour test . The read-across substance was expected to be stable in water, as explained above. The pH values of the test solutions were not adjusted. The test solutions showed initial pH values between 8.5 and 9.7. The recommended pH range for daphnids given in the OECD TG 202 was only kept in the control (0 mg/L) and in the treatments <= 25 mg/L, while the test solutions >= 50 mg/L showed initial pH values above 9. After 48 hours, the pH value shifted to acceptable levels in all treatments. However, an influence of the pH value on the toxicity of 3-aminopropyldiethylamine towards daphnids cannot be excluded. The 48 -h EC50 was determined to be 51.8 mg/L (BASF AG, 1989, report no.: 1/0020/2/89 -0020/89). This value is based on not neutralised test solutions.
In conclusion, 2 -aminoethyldiethylamine (CAS 100 -36 -7) is expected to be acutely harmful to aquatic invertebrates.
