Reported statistics and error estimates:
EC10-value after 48 h and the EC50-values were calculated by sigmoidal dose-response regression. The confidence intervals were calculated from the best-fit values, the standard error and the t-distribution with the software GraphPad prism5 wherever feasible. The concentration-effect relationships are graphically presented.
The EC50-value for the reference item and its confidence limits were calculated accordingly.

Applicant's summary and conclusion

Validity criteria fulfilled:
yes
Conclusions:
Based on the nominal concentrations of the test item Sorbitanmonocaprylate, the 48-h EC50 for Daphnia magna was calculated to be 40.1 mg/L (95 % confidence limits: 37.1 – 42.3 mg/L). The NOEC after 48 h was 25.0 mg/L. The LOEC after 48 h was 50.0 mg/L.
Executive summary:

In the acute immobilization test to Daphnia magna (STRAUS), the effects of the test item Sorbitanmonocaprylate (batch number: DEG4149186) were determined according to OECD 202 (2004) from 2012-10-31 to 2012-11-02 at Dr. U. Noack-Laboratorien, Käthe-Paulus-Str. 1, 31157 Sarstedt, Germany.

The study was conducted under static conditions over a period of 48 h with 5 concentration levels of the test item Sorbitanmonocaprylate. The nominal concentrations in the range of 6.25 to 100 mg/L were prepared with dilution water in a geometric series with a dilution factor of 2. Twenty daphnids were exposed to each concentration level and the control. The biological results are presented in Table 3.

The tested concentration levels of the test item of 6.25 to 100 mg/L and the control were analytically verified by analysis of dissolved organic carbon (DOC, according to DIN EN 1484) at the start of the exposure (fresh media, 0 h) and at the end of the exposure (old media, 48 h).

The measured concentrations of dissolved organic carbon in the fresh media (0 h) were in the range of 4.82 to 54.4 mg C/L in the concentration levels of 6.25 to 100 mg/L, and 0.803 mg C/L in the control. In the old media (48 h), the measured concentrations of dissolved organic carbon were in the range of 5.67 to 60.8 mg C/L in the concentration levels of 6.25 to 100 mg/L, and 1.47 mg C/L in the control.

All effect values given are based on the nominal concentrations of the test item Sorbitanmonocaprylate (Table 1).

Water quality parameters (pH-value and dissolved oxygen concentration), measured in the fresh (0 h) and old media (48 h), were within acceptable limits. The validity criteria of the test guideline were fulfilled.
