An OECD 301B test conducted for the read-across substance, epoxidised soybean oil, indicate that the substance is readily biodegradable and as such will degrade rapidly in the environment. The results show that the substance was 92% degraded by day 28 of the study and the 60% pass level was reached within the 10-day window. As such, the substance is not expected to be persistent in the environment. It is considered that reaction of ESBO with ethylene glycol will not negatively influence biodegradation, as it will be linked to ESBO via ether linkages and without any cross-branching which would block biodegradation.

Information on the biodegradation of ethylene glycol has also been included as this may be a product of degradation. The information indicates that ethylene glycol will degrade rapidly in the environment.

As the substance is considered to be readily biodegradable, no further tests on biodegradation are required.

In a non-guideline test of ready biodegradability over a 20 day period, ethylene glycol was found to be 100% degraded by day 20 and the 10 -day window was considered to have been met. This indicates that ethylene glycol is readily biodegradable and non-persistent.
