Description of key information

N-[2-(piperazin-1-yl)ethyl]C18-unsaturated-alkylamide (AA-AEP) is quickly degraded with an average half-life of 4.5 days at 12 °C and piperazine acetic acid was identified as metabolite formed. This is in perfect agreement with the available biodegradability results for AA-AEP. In an STP simulation study >99.99% removal of AA-AEP was observed from which 0.042% via adsorption to sludge using specific chemical analyses based on high recoveries of spiked sludge and effluent samples. Because piperazine acetic acid is cationic the removal via sorption will not be related to the organic carbon fraction of the sorbent but related to the cation exchange capacity. It is therefore expected that a significantly large fraction of piperazine acetic acid in the STP is removed via sorption to sludge.


 

Additional information

Based on the available biodegradation results partial biodegradation of N-[2 -(piperazin-1 -yl)ethyl]C18 -insaturated-alkylamide is demonstrated where N-(2-aminoethyl)piperazine  (CAS Num: 140 -31 -8) has been identified as the product formed (Geerts et al.,2014). This means that the parent; N-[2 -(piperazin-1 -yl)ethyl]C18 -insaturated-alkylamide is most likely completely removed within 28 days in the ready test.

Based on the uses claimed for N-[2-(piperazin-1-yl)ethyl]C18-insaturated-alkylamide soil exposure is likely. It is however very unlikely that further degradation of N-(2-aminoethyl)piperazine will occur in soil. Further testing in soil is therefore not expected to deliver more information. For soil therefore a worst-case half life value of 3000 days (Kd = 2000 L/kg) is used. In accordance with column 2 of REACH annex IX, further degradation testing does not need to be conducted as the chemical safety assessment does not indicate a need for further investigation.
