A study was performed to determine the potential for biodegradation of the test item in water by the carbon dioxide evolution method following OECD Test Guideline 301D. In this Guideline a method is described that permits the screening of chemicals for ready biodegradability in an aerobic aqueous medium.
The amount of carbon dioxide (CO2) released upon biodegradation of the test item and a reference substance, sodium benzoate, was measured.
Under the described test conditions 69-79 % of the test substance was degraded within the 30 day test period (test concentration: 2 respectively 5 mg/L). Since the pass level (= 60% ThOD for respirometric methods according to the OECD-Guideline 301) was not reached within a 10-day window, the test substance is classified as readily biodegradable but failing the 10 - day window.The test is considered valid because the results of the parallel assays at the end of the test and at the end of the time window, do not differ from each other by more than 20 % and the percentage degradation of the reference compound reached the pass level within 14 days. Oxygen depletion in the inoculum blank does not exceed 1.5 mg dissolved oxygen per litre after 30 days and the residual concentration of oxygen in the test bottles does not fall below 0.5 mg/L at any time.
