The relative density is the ratio between the mass of a volume of the sample at 20°C, and the mass of the same volume of water, determined at 4°C. The relative density has no dimension and is given by the formula

D= (m1/m2)*p

where:

m1 is the apparent mass, in grams, of sample required to fill the flask at 20°C

m2 is the apparent mass, in grams, of water required to fill the flask at 20°C

p is the density of water at 20°C = 0.9982g/mL
