Description of key information
Additional information
4.1 Appearance / physical state / colour
Read across:
The physical state of Menthol (CAS no. 89-78-1) was described as a crystalline, organic solid (Merck Index, 2006).
4.2 Melting point / freezing point
Read-across:
The melting range of Menthol (CAS no. 89 -78 -1) is 41 - 43°C (Merck Index, 2006).
4.3 Boiling point
The boiling range of DL-Menthol (CAS no. 1490-04-6) isomers is 212 - 216 °C at 1013 hPa (Beilstein 2009).
4.4 Density
The density of DL-Menthol (CAS no. 1490 -04 -6) is 0.90 g/cm³ at 20°C (Beilstein, 2009).
4.5 Particle size distribution (Granulometry)
Data waiving:
In accordance with column 2 of REACH Annex VII, the study does not need to be con-ducted as the substance is marketed or used in a non solid or granular form.
4.6 Vapour pressure
Read-across:
The vapour pressure of L-Menthol (CAS no. 2216-51-5) is 1.33 hPa at 56°C and 1013 hPa at 212°C (Jordan, 1954).
4.7 Partition coefficient
The partition coefficient (log Pow) of DL-Menthol (CAS no. 1490 -04 -6) is 3.79 at 25°C (Beil-stein, 2009).
4.8 Water solubility
The water solubility of DL-Menthol (CAS no. 1490 -04 -6) was determined using the method OECD Guideline 105 and EC Guideline A.6. Menthol is moderately soluble: 508 mg/L at 20 °C and pH 6.3 (Bayer AG, 1989).
4.10 Surface tension
Data waiving:
In accordance with column 2 of REACH Annex VII, the study does not need to be con-ducted as based on structure, surface activity of the substance is not expected.
4.11 Flash point
The flash point of DL-Menthol (CAS no. 1490 -04 -6) is 87°C. The study was conducted accord-ing ISO 2719: 2002 (Determination of flash point - Pensky-Martens closed cup method) (Bayer Industry Services, 2006).
4.12 Self-ignition
The self-ignition temperature of DL-Menthol (CAS no. 1490 -04 -6) is determined to be 260 °C at 1014 hPa (Currenta, 2010).
4.13 Flammability
Burning rate, solids:
The test item is a liquid. Testing was not necessary. This test is only applicable to solid materials.
Contact with water:
The structural formula of the test item contains none of the functional groups quoted in Manual of Tests and Criteria, appendix 6, article 5.3 (Currenta, 2010).
Pyrophoric properties:
Experience in the application of the other tests shows that the substance does not ignite spontaneously on coming into contact with air at normal temperatures (i.e. the substance is known to be stable at room temperature for prolongued periods of time).
4.14 Explosiveness
Data waiving:
In accordance with column 2 of REACH Annex VII, the study does not need to be con-ducted, as the substance does not contain a chemical moiety suggesting a potential for explosivity (according to United Nations (2003), (Annex 6, Table 6.1).
4.15 Oxidising properties
Data waiving:
The substance is incapable of reacting exothermically with combustible materials on the basis of the chemical structure (see Manual of Tests and Criteria, Appendix 6, article 5.3).
