Materials and methods
Test guideline
- Qualifier:
- according to guideline
- Guideline:
- EU Method A.14 (Explosive properties)
- Principles of method if other than guideline:
- A Koenen test apparatus was used for determination of sensitivity to heat (flame), a fall hammer for determination of sensitivity to shock and a friction test apparatus for determination of sensitivity to friction.
PERFORMANCE OF THE TEST
Test substance (ca 0.5 g) was sieved through a 0.5 mm sieve and dried under a vacuum and over phosphorus pentoxide. The dried material was used in both the shock and friction tests.
THERMAL SENSITIVITY (EFFECT OF A FLAME)
The heating rate of the propane burners was checked using a steel tube containing 27 cm3 dibutyl phthalate, restricted with a 1.5 mm diameter orifice, and was found to be 200°C/min between the temperatures of 135°C and 285°C (within the specified rate of 185 to 215°C/min). A steel tube was filled with test compound (ca 19 g), a 6 mm diameter orifice plate was fitted, and the tube placed in the Koenen apparatus. The burners were ignited and left on for 5 minutes (unless an explosion was recorded before this time).
Three tests were carried out using a 6 mm diameter orifice plate, using a fresh sample and a new tube each time. A further three tests were then performed using a 2 mm diameter orifice plate.
MECHANICAL SENSITIVITY (SHOCK)
Dried test substance (40 mm3) was put in the die assembly (the die assembly had been degreased with acetone) and placed on the anvil in the drop hammer apparatus. A 10 kg weight was released from a height of 0.4 m. The test was performed six times using a fresh sample on each occasion.
MECHANICAL SENSITIVITY (FRICTION)
Dried test substance (10 mm3) was placed on the porcelain plate, and the porcelain peg drawn to and fro across with a loading of 360 N. The test was performed six times, using a fresh sample on each occasion - GLP compliance:
