Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

Justifications and discussions

Category definition:
The category covers mostly long-chained (i.e. R-CH2-COOR1 with R and in respective cases R1 being >= C12 up to C30), saturated, unsubstituted and unbranched fatty acids (and their Ca-salts), esters and alcohols of high purity, which allows relating any observable effects to the long-chained substances itself. For further details see chapter 1 within the category document.
Category rationale:
The category hypothesis is that all members are of high structural similarity with only very minor differences in their physico-chemical properties as well as in their toxicological and ecotoxicological behaviour.
The members of the category share a very similar chemical structure with long, mainly even-numbered alkanoic acids of a similar chain length profile (alkanoic units), the corresponding esters with either alkyl alcohols of the same chain length distribution, or ethylene glycol (1,2-ethanediol) or 1,3-butanediol (1-methyl-1,3-propanediol) and the corresponding salts. Slight variations in composition and the distribution of chain lengths between members of the category are not expected to have a substantial impact on their physico-chemical, toxicological and ecotoxicological properties.
All members have comparable physico-chemical properties (e.g. melting point, density, low solubility in water, partition coefficient octanol-water) and exhibit low toxicity in mammals and environmental organisms.
Thus, the available toxicological and ecotoxicological data can be used for all other members of this category.
