The corrosive property of the reaction mass of DPM, TPM and sodium methylate limits the acute exposures and risks of any systemic effects due to the only systemically active component in the mixture: methanol. Acute dermal or inhalation DNELs are therefore not quantifiable for this mixture, as methylate will be more irritating than methanol itself. Upon longer term, low level (i.e. sub-irritant) inhalation exposures, some methanol will be formed. In this case, a DNEL protective of the local and systemic effects of methanol is appropriate. The IOELV for methanol of 200 ppm (260 mg/m3), based on absence of increased formate levels in human volunteers, is proposed as the long term systemic inhalation DNEL for workers for this reaction mass.
