Additional information
The only aquatic toxicity study performed with DEGDEE available is in brackish water on fish (Alburnus alburnus L.) and crustacean (Nitocra spinipes) (Linden et al.,1979). However, substances are more toxic in fresh than brackish water so salinity level is important (Bengtsson and Tarkpea, 1983). Therefore read across to the category members (Category Approach-Read across Bis(2 -ethoxyethyl)ether, 2013) as well quantitative SAR modelling has been summarised and results support the fact that DEGDEE is not toxic to aquatic organisms.
The quantitative SAR modelling (ECOSAR) predicted values for adverse effect levels from DEGDEE exposure are very high. This QSAR model is typically accurate in predicting toxicity values for non-reactive and difficult to activate materials such as DEGDEE. It considers DEGDEE as a neutral organic compound. DEGDEE Log Kow correlates with the partitioning of the test substance between the aqueous and lipid (Fish, Daphnia, Alga) phases as such. The mechanism of toxicity to aquatic organism is believed to be narcosis.
Acute toxicty to fish (determined by QSAR), LC50(96 Hours) = 2609.347 mg/L.
A short-term toxicity study in fish was carried out using the Bleak (Alburnus alburnus) in brackish water (Linden et al.,1979). The time of exposure was 96 hr and the mortality rate was observed to obtain an LD50 for the test substance. The LD50 for diethylene glycol diethyl ether was > 10000 mg/L. This study was used as a supporting study.
Acute toxicity to aquatic invertebrates (Daphnia, determined by QSAR), LC50(48 Hours) = 1178.847 mg/L.
A short-term toxicity test in an aquatic invertebra (Nitocra Spinipes) was undertaken in brackish water (Linden et al.,1979). The time of exposure was 96 hr and mortality was observed to obtain an LC50 value. The LC50 for diethylene glycol diethyl ether was 6600 mg/mL
Acute toxicity to aquatic plants (Algal inhibition test, determined by QSAR), EC50(96 Hours) = 291.765 mg/L.
Activated Sludge Respiration Inhibition Test (ASRIT, OECD209), EC50(3 Hours) > 1000 mg/L.
A long-term toxicity test on the effect on aquatic invertebrates was carried out using Ceriodaphnia dubia. The exposure period was 7 days and the effect of the test compound on inhibition of reproduction was observed. The 7-day EC10 for diethylene glycol monoethyl ether was 7.38 mg/L.This substance is used as read across for DEGDEE (Category Approach-Read across Diethylene Glycol Diethyl Ether, 2013).
On the basis of the available data, Bis(2-ethoxyethyl)ether is not classified for aquatic toxicity.
