Results
Irritation parameter:
other: retinal toxicity
Time point:
other: 3 hrs
Remarks on result:
other: Irritating to eyes
Other effects:
Nausea, vomiting and diarrhea was observed three hrs after ingestion. Two hours later he had blurred vision .Ocular examination showed a visual acuity (VA) of hand motions in both eyes. The fundi showed retinal edema with hypo pigmentation in the macular area. Fundus Fluorescein angiography(FFA) showed extensive RPE window defects in both eyes. The flash ERG showed a marked reduction in amplitude and delayed implicit time of a- and b-waves with all stimuli in both eyes. Flash VEP showed a normal latency and decreased amplitude of P100 in both eyes. Findings from urine examination and blood chemistry were normal.

Conclusions:
From the above case study it is concluded that potassium iodate produce retinal toxicity that damage RPE and photoreceptor cells

Executive summary:

In a case studya 22-year-old man had drunk approximately half of the contents (approx 300 ml) of a whiskey bottle .The bottle had contained a concentrated KIO3 solution. The patient weighed 45 kg, so the approximately oral dose ingested was 187 mg/kg body weight. Three hours after ingesting the solution, he experienced nausea, vomiting and diarrhoea. Two hours later he had blurred vision that he described as “seeing in a fog." Ocular examination showed a visual acuity. The fundi showed retinal edema with hypo pigmentation in the macular area. This shows that potassium iodate produce retinal toxicity that damage RPE and photoreceptor cells.
