The lower boiling temperature was chosen as the key value because it is also used in the ASTM standard test method for boiling range distribution of petroleum fractions by gas chromatography (ASTM D2887). The calibration mixture to be used for this ASTM standard procedure is a mixture of hydrocarbons (C5-C44) of known boiling point, whereby the boiling point of Octadecane is stated to be 316°C.
