The solubility CS of 3,3’,5,5’-Tetramethyl-1,1’-biphenyl-2,2’-diol in distilled water was determined according to the European Commission Council Regulation (EC) No 440/2008, Annex, Part A, A.6., OECD-Guideline 105 and US EPA Product Properties Test Guideline OCSPP 830.7840, using the column elution method.

The preliminary test was performed in distilled water. Increasing amounts of distilled water were added to about 10 mg of the test item. The mixtures were shaken vigorously after each addition of water for about 10 minutes. The final mixture (1000 mL) was allowed to stand for 96 h for final control.

Even in a total volume of 1000 mL of distilled water still undissolved particles could be observed after 96 h. This result indicated that the water solubility of the test item was below 10 mg/L. Therefore the column-elution method was chosen for this study.

The concentration of 3,3’,5,5’-Tetramethyl-1,1’-biphenyl-2,2’-diol was determined by HPLC-MS analysis. The reversed phase HPLC-MS method used was found to be valid.
