Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

Additional information

The registration substance 'Paraffin waxes (Fischer-Tropsch), isomerization' is a white solid at standard temperature and pressure.

Given its complex and variable composition and depending on the product grade, this mixture of linear and branched aliphatic hydrocarbons has a measured pour point range of 78 to 90°C (ASTM D97) and a measured boiling range of 375 to >700°C (ASTM D7169). The measured relative density is 0.84 to 0.85 at 15°C (ASTM 4052 and ASTM D1250 table 53A) and the viscosity ranges from about 18 to 21 mm2/s at 100°C mm2/s. The substance has a measured flashpoint of >239°C (ASTM D93, closed cup), a measured autoignition temperature of 422°C (EU Method A.15) and a measured vapour pressure of 1.7 Pa at 20°C (EU Method A.4).

Measured (whole-substance) water solubility and partition coefficient are not available for the registration substance; instead, data of the closely related substance GTL waxy raffinate [C15-50; CAS 848301-87-1, EC 482-130-1] are used, covering the low molecular weight fraction of the registration substance up to C50:

- water solubility: 3.1 mg TOC/L at 20.0±0.5°C (EU Method A.6);

- partition coefficient: log Kow >6.5 at 40 °C and pH7 (EU Method A.8).

The use of these data for the registration substance is considered justified on the basis of the following conclusions:

- water solubility: as the water solubility decreases with increasing carbon chain length, it can be safely concluded that the corresponding result for the (solid) registration substance containing higher molecular weight constituents (C25 - C150, about 30-55% >C50) should be << 3.1 mg TOC/L at 20.0 ± 0.5°C; as key result, a water solubility of approx. 1 mg TOC/L (rather < 1 mg TOC/L) is applied for the registration substance, which is supported by a test result for the closely related (liquid) substance GTL base oil (CAS 848301-69-9, EC 482-220-0), consisting of linear and branched alkanes (paraffins) with a small amount of cycloalkanes in the carbon range from C18 to C50;

- partition coefficient: due to the general trend of decreasing water solubility with increasing carbon chain length/molecule size and the fact that the experimentally determined value for GTL waxy raffinate is based on the highest calibration standard [DDT, limit value of 6.5], it can be safely concluded that the result for the registration substance containing higher molecular weight constituents (C25 - C150, about 30-55 % >C50) would be the same: 3.16 x 106, log10 KOW >6.50.

For the endpoints vapour pressure, water solubility and partition coefficient, predicted property data for relevant constituents were obtained as described in the endpoint study records.
