Description of key information

According to Regulation (EC) No. 1907/2006 (REACH) Annex VII, section 9.2.1.1, column 2, the study does not need to be conducted because the substance is inorganic.

Additional information

The target substance bis(glycinato-N,O)zinc is constituted of two main components, glycine, and zinc. It is considered to dissociate in aqueous solutions thus, in biodegradation screening tests the single components are assessed. Zinc is inorganic and thus testing for biodegradation is technically not feasible. The other component, glycine, is a ubiquitously occurring amino acid which is known to be readily metabolised by virtually every organism (common textbooks of biochemistry). Furthermore, it was shown to be readily biodegraded by activated sludge (Carlson & Polkowski 1962; Malaney, 1969; Placak & Ruchhoft, 1947; Bernheim et al., 1935). Based on this information, bis(glycinato-N,O)zinc is not considered to be less biodegradable than its main constituent.
