Conclusion on classification
The parent compound palmitoyl chloride rapidly hydrolyses in contact with water and forms palmitic acid and hydrochloric acid.
Data from hydrochloric acid have not been taken into consideration as observed effects are caused by a pH-shift in the test medium. Sufficient data for the parent compound itself are not available.
Therefore, the conclusion on classification will be based on the information available for hydrolysis product palmitic acid.
Official classification regarding environmental hazards:
Aquatic compartment
According to Regulation (EC) No 1272/2008 Annex VI Table 3.1 the substance holds no relevant classification.

Self-classification:
Following CLP (GHS-EU), the substance is neither to be classified as acutely nor as chronically hazardous to the aquatic environment.
Aquatic compartment
The available effect data for palmitoyl chloride as well as its relevant hydrolysis product palmitic acid do not indicate toxic effects below the water solubility limit if palmitic acid (water solubility < 0.05 mg/L; see IUCLID Ch. 4.8).
Palmitic acid is also not to be classified as Category Chronic 4 as the substance is rapdily degradable, has an estimated BCF < 500L/kg, and the effect values are greater than the water solubility limit according to the "safety net" classification as outlined in Table 4.1.0 (Commission Regulation (EU) No 286/2011 amending Regulation (EC) No 1272/2008).
