Chloramphenicol levo is very toxic through the skin. The substance is classified as causing of eye injuries. There is no concern of adverse systemic effects.

Fire-fighting measures

Extinguishing media
Suitable extinguishing media: Foam or carbon dioxide.
Unsuitable extinguishing media: Do not use water Avoid humidification.
Special hazards arising from the substance or mixture: Emits toxic fumes
Recommendations for firefighting personnel: Wear self-contained breathing apparatus and suitable protective clothing.

Accidental release measures

Collect spills. Avoid raising dust. Place in appropriate container for destruction.
Clean contaminated areas. The personnel must wear a mask, gloves and safety glasses.

Handling and storage

This substance is handled under Strictly Controlled Conditions in accordance with REACH regulation Article 17(3) for on-site isolated intermediates and, in case the substance is transported to other sites for further processing, the substance should be handled at these sites under the Strictly Controlled Conditions as specified in REACH regulation Article 18(4). Site documentation to support safe handling arrangements including the selection of engineering, administrative and personal protective equipment controls in accordance with risk-based management systems is available at each manufacturing site.
Written confirmation of application of Strictly Controlled Conditions has been received from every affected Distributor and Downstream Processor/User of the Registrant’s intermediate.

Precautions for safe handling
Protective Measures
Avoid contact with the eyes. Wear protective equipment (see section 8 of this data sheet of security). Do not wear contact lenses when handling the product. Minimize the generation of dust.
Enclose the sources of dust, use ventilation equipment (dust collector at the points of handling).
Advice on hygiene at work
Avoid inhalation or ingestion and contact with skin and eyes. General measures of Occupational hygiene to ensure the safe handling of the substance. These measures assume good cleaning and personal practices, not drinking, eating and smoking in the workplace. Shower and change clothes at the end of the workday. Do not wear contaminated clothing.

Exposure controls / personal protection

Exposure controls
To control potential exposures, dust generation must be avoided. It is recommended the use of adequate protective equipment. Eye protection equipment must be worn (by example, goggles or visors), unless a possible eye contact can be excluded by the nature and type of application (closed process). In addition, protectors should be used for face, protective clothing and safety shoes, as appropriate.
Appropriate technical controls
If user operations generate dust, use closed processes, local ventilation, or other controls to keep dust levels in the air low.
Individual protection measures, such as personal protective equipment
Eye / face protection: Do not wear contact lenses. For powders, wear glasses with side shields or vision glasses wide.
Skin protection: The use of chemical protection gloves and protective work clothing is recommended.
Respiratory protection: The use of local ventilation is recommended to keep the levels below the limit values established. Wear respirator approved by NIOSH / MSHA. Use only in bells chemical
Thermal hazards
The substance does not represent a thermal hazard, therefore no special consideration is required
Environmental exposure controls
Use only in chemical campaigns.
Avoid getting in contact with the environment. Contain the spill. Any spill of large size in water courses should be communicated to the regulatory authority responsible for the environmental protection or a different regulatory body.

Stability and reactivity

Reactivity: Hazardous Polymerization will not occur
Chemical stability: Under normal conditions of use and storage, levorotatory chloramphenicol is stable
Hazardous decomposition products:
Toxic fumes of: carbon monoxide, carbon dioxide, nitrogen oxide, chloride gaseous hydrogen.

Disposal considerations

Dissolve or mix the product with a combustible solvent and burn it in an equipped incinerator with an afterburner and scrubber.
Respect European, national and local environmental regulations.
