Analysis of test substance by gas chromatography (GC)

Test result

Degradation by BOD: 4%, 3%, 5%, mean: 4%

Degradation by GC: 0%, 4%, 0%, mean: 1%

The result of the test indicates the residual rate of the test substance by GC is 81-88 % for both test vessels with water + test substance and withsludge + test substance. The analytical result of soda lime and soda lime plate showed 2 % of the residual rate of the test substance.

On chromatogram in the analysis of the test solution and soda lime plate, a peak of altered material was detected at approximately 5% in K-1228 conversion. Although identification of altered material was tried by GC-MS, estimation of structure was difficult since absolute quantity was too small.

Based on above result, it is assumed that the test substance was partly transferred into soda lime since it has volatile property and then oxidized in the presence of alkali.

Regarding the biodegradability of the test substance, degradation by microorganisms was not confirmed from the result of this test.

Inherent Biodegradablity

Phenol,2-(1,1-dimethylethyl)-4,6-dimethyl- attained 0% degradation after 28 days calculated from oxygen uptake (% of ThOD) and so, therefore, cannot be considered as inherently biodegradable under the strict terms and conditions of the OECD Guidelines.

TOC analysis of Phenol ,2-(1,1-dimethylethyl)-4,6-dimethyl- was not possible due to the insoluble nature of the test material.

A Modified MITI test was carried out due to the insoluble nature of the test material.

A COD value of 2.38 mg 02/mg was obtained for the test material.
