Flammability of solids

In accordance with Regulation (EC) No 1907/2006, Annex XI, Section 1, testing of flammability is not considered to be required for barium dibenzoate, since it is an inorganic metal carboxylate containing the metal cation in the highest oxidised status (Ba 2+) and an anion of an acid which is less susceptible to any form of oxidation than calcium dibenzoate (i.e. a lower hydro-carbon content 64 %). A test on flammability according to EC method A.10. was conducted for calcium dibenzoate which is also an inorganic metal carboxylate with a higher hydrocarbon content (85.8 %) and a cation in the highest oxidation state (Ca 2+) resulting in non-flammable (see supporting information – IUCLID section 4.13).

Barium dibenzoate can thus be designated as non-flammable (Guidance on information requirements and chemical safety assessment Chapter R.7a: Endpoint specific guidance, section R.7.1.10.3). In addition, long-term industrial experience in handling indicates that barium dibenzoate is not flammable.

Flammability in contact with water

The substance does not contain groups that might lead to a reaction with water or damp air, leading to the development of dangerous amounts of gas or gases which may be highly flammable. Furthermore, long-term industrial experience in practical handling of the substance shows that it does not react with water (cf. section 1, Annex XI of Regulation (EC) 1907/2006).

Pyrophoric properties

This substance does not contain any chemical groups that might lead to spontaneous ignition a short time after coming in contact with air at room temperature (circa 20 °C). The ionic and anionic compounds of barium dibenzoate are present in stable oxidation states. Furthermore, long-term industrial experience in handling shows that the substance does not ignite in contact with air (cf. section 1, Annex XI of Regulation (EC) 1907/2006).

Justification for classification or non-classification

Barium dibenzoate does not need to be classified according to CLP Regulation (EC) No 1272/2008 since it is not highly flammable.
