Rationale for reliability incl. deficiencies:
comparable to guideline study
Qualifier:
equivalent or similar to guideline
Guideline:
OECD Guideline 301 C (Ready Biodegradability: Modified MITI Test (I))
Qualifier:

Remarks:
Study carried out outside the EU.
Oxygen conditions:
aerobic
Inoculum or test system:
other: Mixture City sewage, river, lake and sea
Details on inoculum:
City sewage: Return sludge from sewage plants were collected.
River, lake and sea: Surface water and surface soil which are in contact with the atmosphere were collected.
Cultivation:
In about 30 minutes after ceasing the aeration of the sludge mixture, supernatant corresponding to about 1/3 of the whole volume was removed.
Then an equal volume of 0.1(w/v)% fresh synthetic sewage was added to the remaining portion and the mixture was aerated again. This procedure was repeated once every day. The cultivation was carried out at 25±2°C.
Cultivation temperature: 25 +/- 1°C
Cultivation duration: 28 days
Duration of test (contact time):
28 d
Initial conc.:
100 mg/L
Based on:
test mat.
Parameter followed for biodegradation estimation:
O2 consumption
Details on study design:
(1) Control blank (n=1, Vessel #1)
In one test vessel, 10mL of the activated sludge was added to 290mL of the basal culture medium, so that the concentration of the activated sludge reached 30mg/L.

(2) Sludge + aniline (n=1, Vessel #10)
In one test vessel, 30mg of aniline and 10mL of the activated sludge was added to 290mL of the basal culture medium, so that the concentration of aniline and the activated sludge reached 100mg/L and 30mg/L, respectively.

(3) Sludge + test item (Test substance, n=2, Vessel #8 and 9)
In each test vessel, 30mg of the test item and 10mL of the activated sludge was added to 290mL of the basal culture medium, so that the concentration of the test item and the activated sludge reached 100mg/L and 30mg/L, respectively.
Reference substance:
aniline

Key result
Parameter:
other: Percentage biodegradation by GC
Value:
100
Sampling time:
28 d
Details on results:
The average percentage biodegradation by BOD and GC were 60% and 100%, respectively. In addition, growth of the sludge was observed in the vessels of #8 and 9.
Key result
Parameter:
ThOD
Value:
>= 90.57 - <= 91.16 mg O2/g test mat.
Results with reference substance:
