Fluorine reacts violently with water, hydrolysing spontaneously and forming hydrogen fluoride and oxygen.

As fluorine reacts violently with water, true hydrolysis studies have not and cannot be performed. It is however generally accepted that spontaneous hydrolysis occurs corresponding to the following equation:
