During the Keoenen test, the first and final test runs with 6mm orifice diameter were terminated after approximately 40 seconds as it was observed that one of the burners had extinguished and could not be re-ignited. It was determined that this was due to the sample spilling out and emptying out of the tube. Investigation of the tubes after cooling showed that no sample remained in the tubes therefore stopping the testing before 5 minutes had elapsed had no impact on the results of the testing.

FLUOROSULFONIC ADDUCT did not exhibit an explosion during both tests, BAM Fallhammer and Koenen test. The test result is therefore considered Negative. FLUOROSULFONIC ADDUCT is considered as “not explosive under the conditions of guideline EU A.14”.
Executive summary:

The explosiveness properties of FLUOROSULFONIC ADDUCT were evaluated using a mechanical sensitivity test (BAM Fallhammer) and a thermal sensitivity test (Koenen test) according to Method A.14 of Commission Regulation (EC) N°440/2008 of 30 May 2008 and GLP.

A deviation was observed in Thermal sensitivity test. The first and final test runs with 6 mm orifice diameter were terminated after approximately 40 seconds as it was observed that one of the burners had extinguished and could not be re-ignited. It was determined that this was due to the sample spilling out and emptying out of the tube. Investigation of the tubes after cooling showed that no sample remained in the tubes therefore stopping the testing before 5 minutes had elapsed had no impact on the results of the testing.

 

The method following EU A.14 provides a scheme of testing to determine whether a solid or a pasty substance presents a danger of explosion when submitted to the effect of a flame (thermal sensitivity), or to shock or friction (sensitivity to mechanical stimuli), and whether a liquid substance presents a danger of explosion when submitted to the effect of a flame or shock.

The thermal sensitivity test involves heating the substance in a steel tube, closed by orifice plates with differing diameters of hole, to determine whether the substance is liable to explode under conditions of intense heat and defined confinement.

The mechanical sensitivity test (shock) involves subjecting the substance to the shock from a specified mass dropped from a specified height.

The mechanical sensitivity test (friction) wasn't conducted as the test item is a liquid.

No signs of an explosive reaction have been observed in any of the tests. Therefore, the test item FLUOROSULFONIC ADDUCT is considered asnot explosive under the conditions of guideline EU A.14
