Executive summary:

EU Method A.3 (2017) - The determination was carried out by the pycnometer method. Separate aliquots of purified water and test item were equilibrated at 20.0 ± 0.5 °C. The pycnometer was cleaned and dried to constant weight, then filled with equilibrated purified water and re-weighed. The pycnometer was emptied and dried, then filled with the equilibrated test item and reweighed. The procedure was performed in duplicate.

The density (ρ) of the test item was calculated based on the ratio of the mass of test item to the mass of water used to fill the pycnometer using the following equation;

p = (d • (c - a)) / (b - a)

where:

a = mass of pycnometer (g)

b = mass of pycnometer filled with water (g)

c = mass of pycnometer filled with test item (g)

d = density of water at test temperature (kg/m3)

The relative density of solids or liquids is the ratio between the mass of a volume of substance to be examined determined at 20 °C, and the mass of the same volume of water determined at 4 °C. Relative density has no dimensions. The density of water determined at 4 °C is 999.97 kg/m3 (as published by the CRC Handbook of Chemistry and Physics, 94th Edition 2014-2015).
