Additional information

The only study regarding acute toxicity of Imidazole to fish is a static non-guideline screening test performed by BASF (1977). As test species Leuciscus idus was used. After 48h a nominal LC50 of 283.6 mg/l was found. At the time (1977) the test was documented with short notice only. In order to not perform a vertebrate study again and the data are deemed relevant and reliable. In order to support the data on CAS 288-32-4, imidazole, acute data were also taken from CAS 693-98-1, 2-methylimidazole and CAS 916 -47 -7, 1 -methylimidazole. These substances reveal comparable structures as they consist of a imidazole-ring with an additional methyl group. In both substances tested LC50 was detected above 100 mg/L. Additionaly, QSAR toolbox prediction based on read-across were used for supporting the low toxicity of the target substance imidazole to fish. The read-across estimation reveals a LC50 of 140 mg/L, by using 4 other category member substances 2-methylimidazole CAS 693-98-1; 1-methylimidazole CAS 616-47-7; 1-vinylimidazole CAS 1072-63-5 and 1-butylimidazole CAS 4316-42-1 for the calculation. These data support the assumption that imidazole is of low toxicity to aquatic organisms. Due to all the data present, it can be concluded that imidazole is of low toxicity to fish.
