Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

Description of key information

The toxicity of octane-1-thiol to micro-organisms has been read across from tert-dodecanethiol. Gancet (2010) showed the respiration of activated sludge was not affected by tert-dodecanethiol up to a concentration of 8.6 mg/l. Jenkins (1990) showed the EC50 for tert-dodecanethiol could not be calculated as it was not inhibitory to activated sludge at the concentrations tested, however it must be > 10 g/l.

Key value for chemical safety assessment

EC10 or NOEC for microorganisms:
8.6 mg/L

Additional information

The toxicity of octane-1 -thiol to micro-organisms has been read across from tert-dodecanethiol. Gancet (2010) is a GLP-compliant activated sludge respiration inhibition test following OECD guidelines 309. The study has been assigned a Klimisch score of 1 - reliable without restriction (Klimisch et al, 1997) and is considered reliable and suitable for use for this endpoint.

This is supported by Jenkins (1990) is a 3 -hour, static, freshwater, GLP-compliant study on tert-dodecanethiol, testing oxygen consumption, following OECD guideline 309. The validity criteria were fulfilled. The study is considered reliable and adequate for assessment. The toxicity level given is not precise, but provides a minimum toxicity level.
