Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

With high probability acutely not harmful to algae.

Key value for chemical safety assessment

Additional information

The toxicity of propanoic acid, 2,2-dimethyl- (CAS 75-98-9) to algae was investigated in a static test conducted equivalently to OECD 201 using P. subcapitata as test organism (MOE, Japan, 2011). The highest test concentration level of 100 mg/L was additionally tested ph-adjusted in order to exclude pH-based effects. The 72-h ErC50 was determined to be >100 mg/L (nominal, analytically verified; pH-adjusted) as no algal growth inhibition was observed within the exposure period of 72-h at the highest test concentration of 100 mg/L (72-h NOErC = 100 mg/L; nominal, analytically verified; pH-adjusted). In unbuffered test solutions, the 72-h ErC50 was determined to be 66 mg/L (72-h NOErC = 46.5 mg/L); however, these effects were considered to be due to pH. Therefore, the data for the buffered solutions were selected as key data in terms of the chemical safety assessment.

In conclusion, propanoic acid, 2,2-dimethyl- (CAS 75-98-9) is assessed to be with high probability acutely not harmful to algae.
