Description of key information

The substance decomposes in water (BASF SE, 2016).

Key value for chemical safety assessment

Additional information

The hydrolytic decomposition of the substance as a function of pH was studied according to OECD 111 under GLP conditions. The hydrolysis was studied at pH 4, 7 and 9 at temperatures of 20, 40 and 50 °C. A half-life (T1/2) could not be caclulated as the hydrolytic decomposition did not follow first order kinetics. Therefore, only a qualitative statement can be made. The hydrolysis of (diethylamino)nitiril is faster at pH 7 > pH 4 > pH 9. Reaction products found after 4 days (pH 7, 40 °C) are diethyl amine (0.06 g/100g diethyl amine), cyanide (0.019 g/100 g cyanide) and traces of free formaldehyde.

This result is supported by an expert judgement (BASF SE, 1995): the test substance is concluded to decompose in aqueous media.
