Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

Applicant's summary and conclusion

Interpretation of results:
readily biodegradable, but failing 10-day window
Conclusions:
Consequently, NA 1523 was found to be moderately biodegradable (43 - 49%) under the
test conditions within 28 days. However, the pass Ievei for ready biodegradability, i.e. a
biodegradation of at least 60% of the ThOD in a 1 0-day window within the 28-day period of
the testwas not reached.
Executive summary:

The test item NA 1523 was investigated for its ready biodegradability in a manometric respirometry test over 28 days based on EU Commission Directive 92/69 EEC, C.4-D (1992) and OECD Guideline for Testing of Chemieals No. 301 F (1992). The percent biodegradation of the test item was calculated based on the theoretical oxygen demand of 1.23 mg 02/mg test item without nitrification (Th0DNH4) and 1.40 mg 0 2/mg test item with nitrification (ThODNo3). The biochemical oxygen demand (800) of NA 1523 in the test media slowly but steadily increased from about Day 8 until test termination after 28 days. At the end of the 28-day exposure period, the mean biodegradation of NA 1523 amounted to 49% without nitrification and 43% with nitrification. Consequently, NA 1523 was found to be moderately biodegradable (43 - 49%) under the test conditions within 28 days. However, the pass Ievei for ready biodegradability, i.e. a biodegradation of at least 60% of the ThOD in a 1 0-day window within the 28-day period of the testwas not reached. ln the toxicity control, containing both NA 1523 and the reference item sodium benzoate, no inhibitory effect on the biodegradation of the reference item was determined. Thus, NA 1523 had no inhibitory effect on the activity of activated sludge microorganisms. ln the procedure controls, the reference item sodium benzoate was biodegraded by an average of 85% on exposure Day 14, and reached an average biodegradation of 87% by the end of the test (Day 28), thus confirming suitability of the activated sludge.
