Description of key information

4-Toluonitril can be ignited but it is melting and burning off calmly. Therefore 4-Toluonitril is considered to be not highly flammable.

Key value for chemical safety assessment

Additional information

The tests to determine the flammability of 4 -Toluonitril were conducted according to guidelines similar to guideline EU A.10.

The dried 4 -Toluonitril could be ignited by a 1000 °C hot platin wire, which was dipped for 5 seconds into the substance. 4 -Toluonitril was melting and the ignition process was terminated rapidly.

In a second test approx. 200 mg of 4 -Toluonitril were put into a flat iron bowl and heated with an open gas flame burner for 10-15 seconds. 4 -Toluonitril could be ignited and was melting. The ignition process was terminated by burning off calmly.

This reaction could only be observed while the substance was in contact with the open flame.

In a third test approx. 150 mg 4 -Toluonitril and a 1:1 mixture of 4 -Toluonitril with potassium nitrate was put into a red heated iron bowl for 60 seconds. Both, the substance and the 1:1 mixture with potassium nitrate were burning off calmly.

Therefore it is concluded that 4 -Toluonitril can be ignited but is not highly flammable.

Justification for classification or non-classification

Due to the test result 4 -Toluonitril can be excluded from the hazard class “flammable solids”and does not have to be classified.
