Description of key information

Due to the low log Kow of 0.35 no bioaccumulation is expected in aquatic or terrestrial organisms.

Additional information

The measured log Kow of 0.35 at 20°C (Hansch et al. 1995) indicates a low potential for bioaccumulation. This is confirmed by several publications investigating the test bioaccumulation in several marine (Jung et al. 2001) and freshwater fish (Sills, 1979), as well as in the blue shrimp (Hose et al., 1980). In all studies the BCF was determined to be <1 due to low test item concentrations in the extracted tissues. Hose et al., 1980 observed significant amounts of extractable formaldehyde during longer post-mortem storage up to 72 hours, which were produced biologically due to tissue decomposition. All in all accumulation of the test item from the environment is very unlikely. Consequently, secondary poisoning due to food-chain accumulation can be excluded.
