Description of key information

The worst case EbC50 and NOEC values obtained from a 72 hours algal inhibtion test with Iron(+2)sulphate heptahydrate were 11 mg fe/L and 3.2 mg/L (as substance) respectively

The results of a single algal inhibition assay with Iron(+2)sulphate heptahydrate are presented the worst case EbC50 and NOEC values obtained from a 72 hours algal inhibtion test with Iron(+2)sulphate heptahydrate were 11 mg Fe/L and 3.2 mg/L (as substance) respectively.

Data for nitrate toxicity to algae is not available however, based on the fish and Daphnia results presented in points 6.1.1, 6.1.2, 6.1.3 and 6.1.4 it is clear that the iron ion is the more potent ingredient of iron trinitrate and therefore no concern should arise for nitrate. In addition nitrate stimulates plant and algal growth in fact test medium (AAP) recommended within OECD 201 test guideline contains a concentration of 25.5 mg NaNO3/L which is above the Fe endpoints reported above.
