- In 100 g of the substance 743 mg to 1.944 g is soluble in 1L of water at pH 10.12 to 11.87. The result 743mg/L to 1.944 g/L refers to the concentration of the water soluble components of 5 fly ashes (evaporation residue) and is not a concentration of a saturated solution. Main components of ash are insoluble in water. The soluble fraction comprises mostely of calcium, sodium, potasium and magnesium cations and sulphates. The composition of the leachate shows that heavy metals present in ash are very little soluble in water at pH 10.12 to 11.87 and are present in the water solution in concentration lower than 1mg/L.

- In 100 g of the substance 4.1 g is soluble in 1L of water at 21°C and pH 12.8. The result 4.1g/L at such loading refers to the concentration of the water soluble components of ash (evaporation residue) and is not a concentration of a saturated solution. Main components of ash are insoluble in water. The water soluble components of the ash detected in the leachate in the concentration higher than 1 mg/L are cations: Na, K, Ca, Mg and Sr and anions: sulphate and chloride. The composition of the leachate shows that the compounds of trace elements in the ash are very little soluble in water at pH 12.8 and are present in the water solution at ppb level.

Description of key information
In 100 g of the substance 0.743 g-4.1 g is soluble in 1L of water.
Key value for chemical safety assessment
Additional information
The concentration of water soluble components of ashes (residues), coal is 743 mg/L to 4.1 g/L at ca. 21° C and pH 10.12-12.8 at the loading 100g of the substance in 1L of water. The result does not refer to concentration of a saturated solution. Main components of the substance are insoluble in water. The range of values is related to the various compositions of substance, especially with respect to the content of calcium oxide. The soluble fraction comprises mostly of calcium (1580 mg/L reported in ifn study, 2010 and 153-450 mg/L in HY study, 1995), sodium, potassium and magnesium cations and sulphates (at the level of 1200 mg/L reported in ifn study, 2010 for the ash with high content of calcium compounds), chlorides and small amount of phosphate and nitrates. The composition of the leachates show that compounds of heavy metals present in various tested ashes are very little soluble in water at pH 10.12 to 12.8 and are present in the water solution in concentration lower than 1 mg/L.
