Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

Additional information

Coal tar produces low to high acute intoxication towards aquatic organisms: Closed testing conditions that are intended to minimise evaporation resulted in higher acute toxicity, while open test systems that allow ready exchange with the surrounding atmosphere showed low toxic impact (see comparative daphnia tests).

Hence, the effective 50% toxicity values ranged from 2.8 mg/L to > 100 mg/L:

Species
Guideline
Test conditions
Toxicity value
Water solubility [TOC]
Daphnia magna
OECD 202
48 h, static, closed
EL50= 2.8 mg/L
WAF = < 1 mg/L
Daphnia magna
OECD 202
48 h, static, open
EL50= 72 mg/L
WAF ~ 2 mg/L
Fish (Danio rerio)
OECD 203
96 h, semi-static, open
LL50> 250 mg/L
WAF >= 2.5 mgL
Alga (Desmodesmus subspicatus)
OECD 201
72 h, static, open
ErL50= 29 mg/L
WAF ~ 1.5 mg/L

EL and LL = effective and lethal loading, respectively

WAF = water-accommodated fraction

TOC = Total Organic Carbon
