Key study data are available for each relevant physicochemical endpoint for residual aromatic extracts. All substances in the category are viscous liquids at ambient temperature (20°C) and pressure (101.3 kPa). There is no guideline method available for this endpoint and data presented are based on visual observation, supported by data on melting point/pour point and viscosity. The pour point for chemicals in this category is >20°C (CONCAWE, 1992a). The boiling point for residual aromatic extracts is >380°C (CONCAWE, 2010a) and the density ranges from 0.96 to 1.02 g/cm3 (CONCAWE, 1992a) at 15°C. The vapour pressure is <0.01 kPa at 20°C (CONCAWE, 1992a).

Flash points for residual aromatic extracts are generally >250°C (CONCAWE, 1992a). Self-ignition temperatures for members of this category are generally >300°C at 1013 kPa (CONCAWE, 1992a). Residual aromatic extracts are not considered to be flammable or explosive, and do not meet EU classification criteria for oxidising properties. The kinematic viscosity of substances in this category is >2000 mm2/s at 40°C and ranges from 55 to 189 mm2/s at 100°C (CONCAWE, 2010a).
