Materials and methods

Principles of method if other than guideline:
Chemistry /elemental analysis was determined using ICP (inductively Coupled Plasma spectroscopy). Metal speciation/metal mineralogy was assessed from Sequential extraction/metal analysis and mineralogical analysis (XRD and microscopes equipped with EDS (Energy Dispersive Spectrometry) and WDS (Wavelength Dispersive Spectrometry) analysers. The interpretation of the overall results was performed by expert (with profound knowledge of metal particularities).

Applicant's summary and conclusion

Conclusions:
Good quality study that assessed full chemistry and mineralogy of a representative anode copper. Proposed mineralogy (distribution pattern for each key element, i.e. % from total into the various mineralogical forms/species present into the UVCB) can be used for classification of the UVCB substance (mixture toxicity rules).
Executive summary:

The studied ten (10) "primary and secondary anode samples" contain 88.950- 99.779% copper, 20- 77500 ppm nickel, 150- 11200 ppm tin, 25- 9400 ppm lead, 110- 6990 ppm antimony, 40- 2640 ppm sulphur, 145- 2200 ppm silver and 290- 1660 ppm arsenic. Other elements detected include selenium, zinc, bismuth, iron, cadmium, tellurium, cobalt, chromium and oxygen.

The mineralogy of the two studied copper anodes consist mainly of copper 95.3% and 99.5% with accessory alloys, sulphides and oxides.

- Sample 09TT03187 contains as accessory phases 1,4% nickel- antimony- tin –alloys, 1.3% chalcocite, and 1% cassiterite and

- Sample 09TT03484 trace amounts (<0.3%) of lead-, antimony and copper oxides

The studied two (2) "primary and secondary blister copper samples" contain 91.6 and 98.8% copper, 0.27 and 0.52% nickel, 0.09 and 0.7% lead, and 0.06 and 4.1% silver. Both of the samples consist mainly of metallic copper.

- Sample 09TT02775 consist of 93.9% copper, 3.2% silver- antimony –alloys, 1.5% lead- antimony –oxides and accessory novakite – type silver arsenide and tenorite.

- Sample 09TT05249 consist 97.3% copper, 1.8% cuprite, and accessory iron alloy and paulmooreite – type lead- arsenic oxide.
