Data platform availability banner - registered substances factsheets

Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

First-aid measures

General Advice: Have Material Data Sheet readily available.
Take off contaminated clothing and shoes immediately. Show the safety data sheet to the doctor in attendance.
Inhalation: Remove from exposure, lie down. Artificial respiration and/or oxygen may be necessary. Call a physician immediately.
Skin contact: Remove from exposure. Take off contaminated clothing and shoes immediately. Wash off with plenty of water for at least 15 -20 minutes. Call a physician immediately.
Eye Contact: Wash eyes with large amounts of water while lifting lower and upper lids. Call a physician immediately. Washing should continue until medical attention is obtained.
Ingestion: Do NOT induce vomiting. Immediately rinse mouth out with water and spit out. If vomiting occurs, give fluids again. Get immediate medical attention - Take to hospital immediately.

Fire-fighting measures

Suitable Extinguishing Media Foam - acid resistant foam preferred. Carbon dioxide (CO2). Dry powder.
Titanium oxychloride itself is neither flammable nor explosive, but may be involved in a fire with other materials. Hydrogen chloride gas or mist will be released in contact with water.

Special protective equipment for fire-fighters: Wear self-contained breathing apparatus and protective suit.

Do not allow run-off from fire fighting to enter drains or water courses.
Cool tanks, closed containers and pipes exposed to fire with water spray to prevent pressure build-up.

Accidental release measures

Personal precautions: Keep people away from and upwind of spill/leak. Wear personal protective equipment. Avoid contact with skin, eyes and clothing.
Environmental precautions: Avoid subsoil penetration. Do not allow to enter drainage system, surface or ground water.
Methods for cleaning up:
Small Spills: Absorb with non-combustible absorbent material, (e.g. sand, earth, diatomaceous earth, vermiculite). Neutralize with limestone, slaked lime, or soda ash. Shovel up and place in a properly labelled non-metal waste container for disposal. Neutralize spill area, and wash with plenty of water.
Large Spills: Dike spill area with soil or sandbags to contain it and prevent its spread. Prevent liquid from entering sewers or waterways. Water spray can be used to knock down vapours. Remove bulk of liquid, for example with a vacuum truck, for recovery or disposal. Then flush area with water, and neutralize washings with limestone, slaked lime, soda ash, or caustic. If permitted, flush neutralized washing to a waste treatment plant; otherwise transfer to a licensed waste disposal contractor.
Dispose of all contaminants according to federal, state, and local regulations.

Handling and storage

Advice on safe handling: Plan first aid action before beginning work with this product. Wear personal protective equipment. Keep containers tightly sealed. Ensure good ventilation/exhaustion at the workplace.
Requirements for storage areas and containers: Keep containers tightly closed in a dry, cool and well-ventilated place. Store in original container. Prevent any penetration into the ground.
Advice on common storage: Store under dry conditions. Must be stored in a spill containment system (retention area of adequate capacity, having an impervious floor).

Exposure controls / personal protection

Engineering measures: Ensure adequate ventilation, especially in confined areas.
Personal protective equipment
Respiratory protection: Suitable respiratory equipment: When workers are facing concentrations above the exposure limit they must use appropriate certified respirators.
Eye protection: Tightly fitting safety goggles; face-shield.
Hand protection: Acid proof gauntlet gloves.
Skin and Body Protection: Long sleeved shirt and trousers of impervious material. Acid proof apron and boots.

Stability and reactivity

Stability: Stable under recommended handling and storage conditions.
Conditions to avoid: Temperature above 60°C. Heating above 35°C may release toxic and irritating hydrogen chloride gas.
Materials to avoid: Water, caustics, common metals, alkali metals or active metals, cyanides, sulfides, oxidising agents
Hazardous decomposition products: Gaseous hydrogen chloride (HCl)
Hazardous reactions: Potential for exothermic hazard - avoid uncontrolled contact with water.
Possible hazardous reaction products / materials to be avoided:
materials giving off hazardous gases under acidic conditions (metals - hydrogen formation; oxidizers - toxic chlorine gas, cyanides or sulfides - toxic hydrogen cyanide or hydrogen sulfide gas)

Hazardous polymerization: Hazardous polymerization does not occur.

Disposal considerations

Product: Dispose of as hazardous waste in compliance with local and national regulations.
Contaminated packaging: Empty contaminated packaging thoroughly. They can be recycled after thorough and proper cleaning. If recycling is not practicable, dispose of in compliance with local regulations.
