Guidance on Safe Use
Administrative data
First-aid measures
Use appropriate protective equipment when treating a contaminated person.
Place contaminated clothing in a sealed bag for disposal.
Inhalation :
Move the person away from the contaminated area.
Make the affected person rest.
Obtain medical attention. Show the Safety Data Sheet to the doctor.
Skin contact :
Remove all contaminated clothing and footwear.
Wash immediately and thoroughly with soap and water for a prolonged period (at least 15 minutes).
Obtain medical attention. Show the Safety Data Sheet to the doctor.
Eye contact :
Immediately rinse with plenty of running water for a prolonged period, (at least 15 minutes) whilst keeping the eyes wide open
Always obtain medical advice immediately, even if there are no symptoms.
Show the Safety Data Sheet to the doctor.
Ingestion :
NEVER attempt to induce vomiting. Do not give anything to drink.
Always obtain medical attention immediately.
Fire-fighting measures
Protection of fire-fighters :
- Self-contained breathing apparatus.
Suitable extinguishing media :
- Foam
- Powders
- Carbon dioxide (CO2)
Not suitable extinguishing media :
- NEVER USE WATER!
- NEVER USE HALOGENATED FLUIDS (HALONS)!
Specific hazards :
- Highly flammable liquid.
- On combustion forms: Carbon oxides (CO + CO2) - Hydrochloric acid - amorphous silica
Specific fire fighting methods :
Cool down the containers/equipment exposed to heat with a water spray.
Accidental release measures
# Personal precautions :
If spillage occurs on the public highway, indicate the danger and notify the authorities (police, fire brigade ).
Do NOT approach from DOWNWIND.
NO flames, NO sparks. Eliminate all sources of ignition.
Do NOT attempt to take action WITHOUT suitable protective equipment.
Remove all incompatible materials as quickly as possible:
- alkalis and caustic products.
Stop the leak. Turn leaking containers leak-side up to prevent the escape of liquid.
Mechanically ventilate the spillage area, whilst avoiding the formation of explosive concentrations.
# Environmental precautions :
For a large spillage, contain the spillage by bunding. Do NOT discharge into drains or rivers.
# Methods for cleaning up :
Recovery : Collect up the product and place it in a spare container:
- suitably labelled.
- acid-resistant.
- tightly closed.
Use flame-proof equipment. Keep the recovered product for subsequent disposal.
Neutralization : Absorb non-recoverable liquid with:
- dry sand or dry inert absorbent.
Cleaning/Decontamination : Decontaminate and wash the floor with an appropriate solvent.
Then wash with plenty of water.
Disposal : Incinerate contaminated materials at an authorized installation.
Handling and storage
# HANDLING
- Technical measures :
Vapour extraction.
Material and equipment suitable for use under explosive conditions.
Earth the equipment. Avoid the build-up of electrostatic charge. Blanket with inert gas.
Only use materials resistant to strong acids
Do NOT use compressed air to transfer, discharge or transport the product.
# STORAGE
- Technical measures :
Take all necessary measures to avoid accidental discharge of products into drains and waterways due to the rupture of containers or transfer systems.
- Recommended storage conditions :
Store the container:
- tightly closed and dry.
- in a cool, well-ventilated area
- away from any source of heat.
- in an inert atmosphere.
Store away from incompatible materials.
- strong oxidizing agents.
- water, humidity.
- alcohols.
- strong bases.
Recommended packaging material : steel
