Description of key information

Green liquor sludge contains primarily inorganic salts which do not burn. According to information on the composition there may be up to 20% carbon (soot) present in the substance, which may be combustible. 
GLS was not flammable in the preliminary flammability test (method A.10): it did not ignite until 2 minutes and did not burn over a length of 200 mm within 4 minutes. Therefore the full test programme (main test) was not carried out and the test substance is not classified as "highly flammable", according to the guideline.
GLS has a high content of uncombustible carbonates, which liberate CO2 when heated, and consequently would retard any combustible reactions of the material.

Justification for classification or non-classification

The test substance did not burn over a length of 200 mm within 4 minutes in the preliminary flammability test (Method A.10). Therefore the full test programme (main test) was not carried out and the test substance is not classified as "highly flammable", according to the guideline.

Pyrophoricity test was not performed experimentally because practical experience exists at the manufacturers and the test facility, e.g. when handling small amounts of the test substance repeatedly in air during testing. The test substance is therefore regarded as not being pyrophoric.

The test substance is neither regarded as being flammable in contact with water, since the substance as it is manufactured contains ca. 50 % water, and practical experience of the manufacturers and the test facility shows that no gases are developed, when the test substance is in contact with water.

Flammability properties did not change in drying.
