Administrative data
- Endpoint:
- bioaccumulation in aquatic species: fish
- Type of information:
- experimental study
- Adequacy of study:
- key study
- Reliability:
- 2 (reliable with restrictions)
- Rationale for reliability incl. deficiencies:
- other: see 'Remark'
- Remarks:
- The study was conducted in compliance with Japanese Kanpogyo Notification No. 5, Yakuhatsu Notification No. 615 and 49 Kikyoku Notification No. 392. Not all parts of the study are available. All three test concentrations were significantly greater than the measured water solubility of the substance (0.002 mg/L) and test solutions most likely were present as dispersions.

PREPARATION OF SPIKED WATER
- Details of spiking: Two grams of test substance were dissolved in 40 mL of dimethylsulfoxide. Two hundred grams of Tween 80 were dissolved in the solution obtained. The solution obtained was then transferred into a 2-L measuring flask with dechlorinated tap water and a dispersed stock solution (concentration of the test substance 1000 mg/L) was obtained after adding water to volume.
- Controls:
- Chemical name of vehicle (organic solvent, emulsifier or dispersant): dimethylsulfoxide, Tween 80
- Concentration of vehicle in final test solution: Group 1 had a concentration of 200 ug/L, Group 2 had a concentration of 20 ug/L.

- Executive summary:
A bioconcentration study was conducted with 3,3'-[biphenyl-4,4'-diylbis(oxy)]dianiline in common carp according to the relevant Japanese guidelines (Mitsui Toatsu Chemicals 1997). Studies over a period of 8 weeks were performed using three concentration levels of 200, 20 and 5 microgram/L. The corresponding bioconcentration factors observed were 108-254, 617-1324 and 1596-2590. Concentration factors corrected for lipid contents in the low dose group were 800-1300, thus comparable to those found in the mid-dose group. An excretion study performed in the high and mid-dose groups revealed half-lives for the retention in the organism of 58.1 and 84.4 hours, respectively.
